Hospitalized in critical condition!

Urgent help needed for Mufasa (now Finley)!

We got an urgent plea for help from Miami-Dade Animal Control. When our volunteer got there, Mufasa collapsed. The rescue coordinator told us to get him to the closest emergency hospital stat! Mufasa is now at the VCA in Miami under 24/7 critical care.

This sweet little guy is fighting for his life, all while giving kisses to staff.

Mufasa is severely emaciated and dehydrated. His body score is between 1 & 2. Zero being unable to survive. Several diagnostics have been done. Most notable is a former trauma to his hip/pelvis area. Something happened to him that was never treated. We cannot imagine what this boy has been through.

He needs you!

The owner surrendered him to the county shelter yesterday. We do not know yet if an investigation is being done. The owner stated that Mufasa hasn’t received any healthcare after being questioned by officers.

We never anticipated the expense of paying for emergency care in Miami. The prices are astronomical. Two days of diagnostics and hospitalization is costing us between $3,425-$4,055. If he needs to stay longer, more will be spent. Our director had to front the lower end of the estimate as a deposit yesterday. We are in desperate need of funding to keep this guy going.

A big thank you to Dana for jumping into action to help us get this boy immediately to the vet. Not only did she give up her day, while she was in the emergency clinic, somebody hit her car and took off. They are investigating after getting a license plate on the camera.

Lots of prayers needed for this little guy. We are hopeful he will pull through. There’s a lot going on, but we’ll keep you posted…

Our boy Finley enjoying some fresh air before the summer afternoon showers started.

Had another follow up at the vet yesterday and officially started him on high dose prednisone for his MMM. 4 doses in, and he went from taking 25mins to eat his meal to about 7mins! I would say that is marked improvement!

We are playing this by ear as he did have some positive response to the Rimadyl, but not where we needed to see it most: his jaw mobility. He appears to be getting some back at least with how he's eating now that he's on the pred. We got a more appropriate toy to try to work on his chewing which we will introduce in a couple of days.

This is quite a process, but he's worth it. Keep those positive vibes and prayers coming, he still has a long road ahead!

This was our boy yesterday soaking up the sun... Just know today was a big day forward in his healing journey. Got answers that we needed to know. It's not an awesome prognosis, but it's an answer we needed to move forward and keep him comfy.

He's had a very difficult last 5 days, and it hurt our hearts to see our boy repeatedly refuse food. He's been diagnosed with Masticatory Muscle Myositis, late stage. The muscle has all deteriorated in his skull. It's never going to get better, so now we manage his quality of life.

Getting him to eat anything right now is difficult. He's lost 2lbs. But we will work tirelessly to keep him happy and as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

I don't know how we're JUST NOW noticing it...but twice today he's been out cold...and his little tongue is out while he sleeps????????

He did have a big morning with another vet checkup of which, yes, we are still progressing nicely! He may never get all the muscle back on his head, and he may always be wobbly because his hips may never fully stabilize, but that's all fairly minor considering what he's endured.

Yesterday was weigh in time for our boy Finley! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I've been seeing him fill in, especially this last week. A few days ago we had him in the yard and it just hit me...his ribs and spine are really filling in! Just waiting on his noggin' to fill in????but we're seeing progress there, too. But my favorite are his eyes. They are bright, filled in, and content! 3.2lbs gained this past week! Progress!

Had our first visit with the rescue vet today! Everybody loved Finley (of course!). Thinking target weight should be mid 60s, so a long way to go, but he will need to stay on the slender side because of his hip and spine. Bloodwork is improving! And got the OK to increase his food a bit! All good stuff for our handsome boy!

It's our inaugural weigh in and drumroll.....our boy was weighed in at 36lbs at the emergency vet on May 21. We are happy to report his weight is up to 39.4lbs today!

He eats like a champ. We have a vet visit on Monday where will discuss any potential nutrition adjustments. I'm so proud of our boy!

    MUFASA IS NOW FINLEY ??

We have no idea what this poor pup went through in the past to get to this point. He had to stay at the emergency vet for multiple days because his little body was so emaciated, broken, and he was in critical shape. The vet thinks he endured quite a lot of neglect, which we think is quite evident. He was able to be discharged yesterday and made his way to our foster here in Central Florida. We all agreed that it’s best to put his past behind him, so with a new life comes a new loving home and a new name. Finley ??

We cannot thank you all enough for your support with this kiddo. He has a LONG road ahead of him. Right now he is still battling a URI and malnourishment. Finley also has a heart murmur, orthopedic needs, and it seems some eye trouble. He is going to need a lot of medical visits, potentially a surgery or two once he is stable, and a whole lot of love. We are hopeful that our community will continue to watch his recovery.

His foster absolutely adores him. She said he eats really fast and worries about aspiration. Poor guy. So we are going to use a slow feeder bowl and see how that goes. He also is not drinking much water so she is doing everything she can to encourage him to drink. But he’s resting up in his nice orthopedic bed. She said the foster dad came home from work and Finley was very excited and got out of bed to see him and give him kisses. He is a lover ??

Thank you so much for helping our precious Mufasa! We are just amazed at the outpouring of love for him...

    Here's the latest...

He is doing better, there is a chance he may be able to be discharged tomorrow but we aren’t sure just yet. He has a lot stacked against him. Amongst all his other issues besides his malnutrition, he has a heart murmur and an issue with the part of his femur that connects with his hip. He also has been coughing and seems to have a respiratory infection, so he’s really going through it.

The volunteer who transported him to the ER visited and said he was able to stand but barely. This video pretty much sums things up for the moment...

Mufasa has a very long road to recovery, but we just know he's a fighter. We'll be with him all the way!

    Love,
The Pittie Party of Central Florida
