#GivingZOOday

Urgent help needed for Aslan the Lion!

The Racine Zoo needs your HELP! We house 76 different species of animals and each of these animals has a specific diet that they need to survive. Each and every night, 365 days a year, our keepers work hard to prepare specific, weighted diets for each of our animals, and delivering the food and making sure that each animal is getting the nutrition they need. Along with medications, vet care,& prescriptions, the price tag is steep for a Nonprofit.

Our African lion patriarch, Aslan, injured his growth plate on his back left leg when he was engaged in playful activity with siblings as a cub. He moved to the Racine Zoo in 2005, by which time the injury was healed but unfortunately did not heal properly, causing him to develop 'degenerative joint disease' (osteoarthritis) back in 2007. Discussion and exams with an orthopedic specialist confirmed surgery to fix his malformed tibia was not an option, although other treatments have been used as recommended by our veterinary team. Since 2013 he has been engaged in joint therapy and is observed every two weeks by our veterinary technician along with daily observations from his wonderful keepers here at the Racine Zoo.

Since his arrival, Aslan has sired two litters here at the Racine Zoo with his lovely mate Azizi.

But all of this comes with a hefty price tag that is sometimes difficult for the Racine Zoo to comfortably afford. We urge you to consider the Racine Zoo and Aslan this giving season. Let's work together to make his life brighter.
