Urgent Cleft Palate Surgery

Urgent help needed for Oisin!

Please help American Maltese Association Rescue to get urgent surgery for our foster Maltese, Oisin, whom we saved from a shelter. He has a type of cleft palate which threatens his health. He needs surgery immediately because of risks of infection.   He already was hospitalized after a scary incident caused by the opening in the roof of his mouth. Please help us help him.

Campaign Details

Oisin (Aw-SHEEN), is Irish for little deer. He both looks like a little deer and at the same time is very dear to us and needs us to help him. He came to us with a cleft palate, after being given up to a shelter in VA by his owner. He's only 3.6 lbs and is 7-years-old. A cleft palate is an opening between the mouth and the nose that happens when the tissues separating them do not grow together properly.  Most of us are familiar with this birth defect occurring in the lip, but this one is along the roof of the mouth Sometimes cleft palate is just a cosmetic issue, but in Oisin's case, it affects his health. Because of this deformity, Oisin has several issues with eating and was recently rushed to the vet with a steep drop in his blood sugar, likely due to infection and not eating.  it's also very hard to give him medication because it comes out his nose. In addition, his teeth are in terrible condition and many have to be removed. Infection from them is likely making things worse and his white blood count is elevated. He also has undescended testicles, so in the future, he will need to be neutered to lessen the risk of testicular cancer.

Surgery is underway today, May 11th. The surgeon is going to try to repair the cleft palate and do his dental.  All of this depends on how he does under anesthesia and what they find.

In Irish legend, Oisin was a warrior hero, and in this case our little deer needs heroes out there to help him. As a foster, American Maltese Association Rescue has committed to taking care of him and of his medical needs, but we need your help to pay his costly medical bills. His surgery and visits are estimated at $5500.

Please donate whatever you can and share this campaign to help save little Oisin.  And keep him, and his surgical team, in your thoughts as he undergoes these procedures.

9/25 UPDATE:  As you may remember Oisin had cleft palate surgery 4 months ago Oisin’s cleft palette consisted of not one, but two openings on the roof of his mouth. The surgical repair on the front one did well and healed, but the graft on the back one didn’t take. It’s a very moist area back there so sometimes harder to get the graft to work. We tried to see if he would be alright with only the one opening closed off but he's ended up continuing to have infections from the one that didn't heal.  So we have decided to operate again tomorrow, Sept 26th, to hopefully successfully fix that part of the palate.   This surgery is estimated to cost another $4000.   If you would like to contribute towards the additional medical costs, it would be appreciated. Thank you all for continued concern and we'll keep you posted.

5/21 UPDATE: We know that many of you have been concerned about Oisin after donating to his surgery and wanted to give you another update.  Oisin is recovering and doing reasonably well, but getting him to eat has been a struggle.  He used to figure out some way to eat kibble, even with the two holes in the roof of his mouth but the surgeon nixed that until he's healed. He's been giving his foster mom a tough task, but he's finally doing better with eating. She mixes up some foods to get him the nutrition he needs. He still doesn't eat a lot but more than he did after surgery. Peggy is very aware of insuring that his blood sugar doesn't drop.  He gets more tired than before his surgery, but he loves to follow Peggy around and be by her when she sits down or sleeps.  He hasn't had any nasal discharge like he had before. So it's a slow road but we're hopeful that he'll continue to improve. He has a recheck in 10 days. Here he is in the doorway deciding if he should venture out and then here he is sleeping. Sweet dreams little one. We still need to meet our goal. It would be wonderful to cover the cost of his surgery. Thank you all again.

We wanted to update all of you and thank you so much for donating towards Oisin's surgery. We can feel the love!!  We're almost halfway there with funding.  Oisin got through surgery successfully!  It turns out that he had TWO openings on the roof of his mouth. It's rather miraculous that he survived 7 years with these defects, but it was obviously impacting his life as of late. He will need to have cryptorchid surgery (neutering on undescended testicles) done down the road. The oral surgeon was able to close up the openings and performed a dental, needing to extract 5 teeth. He came home and slept next to his foster mom, Peggy, all night long after surgery nd slept much of the day yesterday as well. Oisin had no appetite, but it's picking up a little bit today.  He's a stubborn little guy and is being given baby food and pedialyte syringed into his mouth, until he wants to eat more on his own. Please keep Oisin in your thoughts.  We really appreciate your donation and hope you will share our funding campaign with your family and friends to cover the cost of his surgery.
