The average life expectancy of someone born in the United States has recently decreased from 78.7 to 78.6 years. Although that may not seem like a lot, the only other time in US history that death rates have fallen steadily was a century ago, between 1915 and 1918. In that time frame, World War I and the Spanish flu pandemic killed 1 million Americans. Heart disease and cancer have long been the leading causes of death for many years. However, death rates from heart disease and cancer are both on the decline and US life expectancy rates are now primarily falling due to suicides and drug and alcohol overdoses. Our markers of well-being — and in particular the absence of hope — match the trends in these death rates.
Suicides and drug & alcohol overdoses increased by 51% from 2005 to 2016. During that same period of time, our lives have become transformed by the power of the Internet and mobile devices. Our lives are very different than prior generations and our mortality statistics indicate things aren't necessarily better.
The Center for Loving Studies is committed to eradicating suicides and accidental deaths from alcohol and drug overdoses by connecting people to hope through a discovery of purpose. By teaching people that they matter, we believe we can put them on a path to success and happiness by forming supportive communities around them. Each student in a Purpose Workshop is introduced to a process to reveal their purpose in life and how to achieve it. Students often come into a workshop broken and disconnected and leave whole and connected to their local community.
Your sponsoring of one or more students enables the Center to reach those that are most at risk in our rural communities. Please sponsor one more hearts
