Brownie, had been sleeping on a porch, finally feeling a sense of safety. He had been peacefully residing alongside chickens for days. Yet, he was targeted and shot by a neighbor who claimed he killed a chicken, an accusation made without a single shred of evidence. No deceased bird was ever found. When authorities arrived, they advised the finder to euthanize him.
No way! We chose to fight. With the help of his dedicated feeder, we got Brownie into the hands of Dr. Martinez.
The initial assessment was devastating. X-rays confirmed that Brownie was struck twice; his body is literally riddled with buckshot on both his left and right sides. The force of the impact sent his system into a tailspin:
Shock & Oxygen Support: He spent the night in an oxygen chamber to stabilize his breathing and address the trauma to his lungs.
Temperature & Fluids: Today, he remains on heat support because his body temperature dropped dangerously low. He is receiving constant IV fluids to stabilize his system.
Monitoring Vital Organs: Lab results show his albumin levels are low, requiring constant monitoring.
Severe Edema: Massive bruising covers his frame, and swelling (edema) is now setting in on his front limb.
The most gut-wrenching part of Brownie’s story isn't the violence he endured, it’s his capacity to forgive. Despite being in significant pain and heavily medicated, Brownie still wiggles. He tries with all his might to roll onto his back for belly rubs the moment a human hand nears him. He was targeted maliciously, yet he still chooses love.
Our Promise to Brownie
His recovery is far from over. As we work to stabilize him, we are also preparing to follow up with the attending Sheriff’s department. We want answers, and we want accountability for this brutal attempt at ending a life.
We cannot do this alone. Brownie’s hospital bills are growing by the hour, and he deserves every bit of hope we can provide. He survived the shotgun; now, he needs our village to help him survive the recovery.
Please help us fight for Brownie.
