Pez needs kidney surgery!

Urgent help needed for Pez!

AMAR's permanent foster Pez, (originally named Jamie), needs to have one of her kidneys removed. She's in end stage hydronephrosis, which is when a kidney swells due to urine failing to properly drain from the kidney to the bladder. Her left kidney isn't working at all and she needs it removed. If left in, it can cause abdominal pain or infection in the future. Pez came to the vet with vomiting and diarrhea and an ultrasound revealed this issue.

Campaign Details

You may remember Jamie (now Pez) coming into AMAR from the Manhattan ACC three years ago.  She had a cleft palate and needed surgery on an ectopic ureter.  The surgeon decided the cleft palate was not impinging on her health and correction would only be cosmetic, but she needed the ureter surgery. It was only partially successful. Thank you to so many of you who made that surgery happen with your contributions.

She has been lovingly cared for by her foster family who is keeping her as an AMAR permanent foster. They renamed her Pez. She's almost 6-years-old.  Now Pez has developed a blockage and needs removal of the kidney as soon as possible. The imaging showed that her left kidney is taking up about half of her abdomen and in fact isn't even a kidney anymore, in the sense that it's not functional and the cellular structure has changed. The vets are concerned about the space it's taking up and the potential for rupture, infection or abscess. She's had a history of UTIs stemming from this same issue. Surgery has it's risks, but it's been deemed dangerous to leave the kidney in.  Surgery is scheduled for Monday, August 6th.

Pez is otherwise healthy, extremely happy, frisky and loving life!  And she’s made quite a name for herself.  She's very popular, has her own Instagram account, "instagram.com/beautiful.champion" and has lots of followers. She's taken part in several dogs with disabilities events because of her cleft palate. She's captured so many hearts and we hope that you will help her live a long and happy life by donating towards this vital surgery on our beautiful champion. Please SHARE this campaign to help reach our goal.

UPDATE 8/6:   We wanted to update everyone on Pez. She's undergoing her kidney surgery today!!  Please keep this sweet girl in your thoughts.  We also just hit 50% of our fundraising goal this morning!!! We couldn't have done it without you. Of course that means we still have 50% of the way to go, but we know that with friends like all of you, we can make it. Please reach out to others if you can.  Through FaceBook, Twitter, email and let them know about Pez and what they can do to help.  We will update you after she comes out of surgery and we get the report from her surgeon.  Thanks again!!

UPDATE 8/3:  We're so excited to report that we have reached 1/3 of our goal!!!! In one day!!!! The generosity you have shown this sweet girl is overwhelming.  Pez has faced so many uphill battles...her cleft palate, her ureter birth defect, frequent UTIs, but as you can see by this photo, she goes through life joyfully and brings unconditional love to all around her.  As we prepare for her going into surgery on Monday, we're so thankful for all of you who have donated and helped us spread the word through social media. We're hoping you will continue to do so until we meet our goal. AMAR already had to put down a sizable (over 1/2) deposit at the surgeon's office today. We are scheduled to take in more dogs this coming week and know that these donations will help free up existing funds for them.
