Sophie Needs Medical Care, Please Help!

Meet Sweet Sophie, a 2-year old girl who was abandoned at the shelter in terrible condition. She struggled to stand due to a torn ACL, and was limping when she was able to get up at all.

It was hard enough for Sophie to care for herself with this and her many other physical ailments, but she had a whole litter of puppies to care for too.

The shelter was able to find homes for each of the puppies, but with all of her medical challenges, Sophie was overlooked by prospective adopters.

It's time for Sophie to have the wonderful life she deserves.

Please consider making a donation to help us get Sophie all the care she needs. Thank you!

Sophie is absolutely doing fantastic. She walks on her own (no sling required anymore) and yesterday she got spayed.

Sophie has already found a family that wants to adopt her and today she is going to live with her new family until she has been cleared for adoption.  She will be so happy to be in a loving home!!

Sophie is scheduled to have X-rays on 8/18 to make sure all has healed correctly, and if everything looks good, Sophie can be officially adopted.

Thank you to everyone who has made this possible! Without your support, we could not help as many dogs with medical problems like Sophie's.

  • Update

Sophie just had her surgery and did great!

It was discovered that she did not actually have an ACL tear, as was previously believed. Instead, she had a lateral digital extensor tendon rupture (a tear in the tendon that helps extend the toes) AND a laterally luxating patella (the kneecap was dislocated to the outside of the knee joint) AND a torn meniscus (the cartilage that cushions the knee joint was damaged).

This type of extended damage caused our vet to believe that something traumatic had happened to Sophie. It sounds like this was the result of being hit by a car, as her original owners believed.

Sophie's prognosis is good. Extending her toes and flexing her ankle might not be perfect, but that may not be noticeable as long as Sophie doesn't do any demanding activities, such as agility.

Recovery shouldn't be as difficult as it would have been had Sophie received the TPLO surgery we originally believed she needed. There was no fractured bone to repair so she will only need to take it easy for about 10-14 days.

Sophie will still need to be spayed, which will be done in about 2 weeks.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this surgery possible.

Please continue to share Sophie's story with family, with friends, and on social media. Sophie will need additional care and medications before she can go to a home of her own.

    Warmly,

Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue

Campaign Details

Sweet Sophie has already endured so much in her short little life. Besides a torn ACL (which is a ligament in the knee that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone), she was found to have tapeworms, fleas, embedded ticks (and numerous dead ticks throughout her coat), and open wounds. It was clear she had been neglected for a long time.

Sophie and her puppies were turned in to a local shelter because her owners could no longer care for any of them. The owners report that Sophie may have gotten hit by a car when she got out a few days ago. They also reported that Sophie was an outdoor dog, never allowed to come inside.

We would like to get a surgery scheduled to fix Sophie's knee, but she will need to gain some weight first, as she is too thin to undergo surgery at the moment.

She will also need to be treated for all of her other ailments, and she will need to be spayed.

Once she is completely healed of everything, we will find her a home where she will be a cherished family member, living indoors with those who love her.

If you’d like to help with Sophie’s recovery and support our mission to save dogs like her, please consider donating. Every dollar makes a difference. And if you can, please share Sophie's story with friends and family.

Thank you! We so very much appreciate your support.
