Fund the AmeriCorps Legacy Building

The AmeriCorps Legacy Building is a solution to unaffordable housing for community service volunteers. The cohort of Resilience Corps VISTAs will redevelop a condemned property, in Duluth, Minnesota's lowest income neighborhood, into a model sustainable single-family cooperative home to provide a permanently affordable housing option in a rapidly changing economy.

Campaign Details

AmeriCorps VISTA is a branch of AmeriCorps that brings full-time volunteers to nonprofits and local government agencies with the goal of eliminating poverty in the United States. These volunteers are contracted into a 1 year term of service, and are required to complete 1800 hours of service within that time frame. During that year, they are compensated below the poverty line, less than $1000/month in Duluth. This makes it difficult for VISTAs to find housing in the city, where rent and utilities will easily take up 40%-50% of their monthly income and can be a deterrent for many who would otherwise commit to a year of service.

The City of Duluth approached Ecolibrium3 for a proposal to transform this blighted property into a useful structure within the community. What came out of the proposal is the AmeriCorps Legacy Building. An affordable rental property with five bedrooms, one being handicap accessible, who commit to one year of service within Duluth. This resource would add to the sustainability of an AmeriCorps VISTA program in Duluth.
