A puppy struggling to breathe

Urgent help needed for Rover!

We just received a desperate late-night call from an independent rescuer in the Bronx. A tiny 6-month-old Yorkie is in need of life-saving intervention.

With every breath, Rover is struggling to breathe; he is lethargic, weak, and refuses to eat or drink. He has blood coming from his anus, and the crackling in his lungs is so loud you can hear it without a stethoscope. His body temperature is 105, and has thick snot is pouring from his nose. Pneumonia.

The rescuer who took him in, was sobbing on the phone. She was watching Rover fade in front of her with no way to afford the emergency care.

We could not let him die. We are all his last hope.

Campaign Details

Rover has been rushed to a critical care hospital and the doctors say his prognosis is guarded. The pneumonia has ravaged his lungs, and they are going to do everything they can to save his life. We will spare no cost, we told the hospital to do everything they can and not to hold back. He is only six months old, and he cannot die this way. No one deserves to suffer, and no one deserves to be in fear of struggling to breathe.

It is vital that we raise the funds to cover his care. Please help us by donating today or sharing his story. Our community is his last hope.

NYC Second Chance Rescue

About the Organization

In 2009, NYC Second Chance Rescue began as a small dream, founded on the firm belief that all animals deserve love and care, and that no animal should ever be subjected to abuse, neglect or homelessness. All proceeds go directly to the animals, and to date, we have relied solely on donations from loyal supporters. Our mission is to offer a second chance to those animals less fortunate — those with critical medical, emotional or behavioral issues.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Rover came to us fighting to breathe from advanced pneumonia. He was so weak, and we were terrified we might lose him. But because of you, your donations, your compassion, your belief in him, Rover got the emergency care he needed.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that Rover is out of the woods and safe in a loving medical foster home. He would not be alive without this community.

His foster shared this beautiful update:

“Rover is such a sweet boy. He follows you everywhere, learns new commands in minutes, and is almost fully potty-trained in just four days. He loves other dogs, loves naps and cartoons, and he’ll place his paw in your hand while he sleeps, just to make sure you’re there.”

Rover survived because you showed up for him. Thank you for giving him his second chance.

    Love,
    NYC Second Chance Rescue

We have wonderful news to share about Rover.

The doctors told us this morning that our sweet boy is brighter, happier, and finally feeling relief. He’s off his IV, walking around with a spark we haven’t seen before, and you can see on his little face how much more comfortable he is. He’s even eating on his own , no appetite stimulants needed, which is a huge step forward for him.

Best of all, the crackling in his lungs, the sound that worried us all so deeply, is beginning to fade. Every small victory means the world, and today’s victories are big.

Thank you to everyone who has held Rover close in your hearts. Your love, your prayers, and your support are helping him fight his way back to the life he deserves. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

    Love,
    NYC Second Chance Rescue

Today… Rover is still fighting with everything he has.

He’s still battling an infection, still running fevers, and isn’t too interested in food. The doctors gave him a drug that increases appetite, and he did eat a little bit. It doesn’t sound like much, but for him, it’s a big step. He was diagnosed with advanced pneumonia, and his lungs are very irritated. Upon arrival, his white blood cell count was 30,000, and it is now below 20,000, which is a huge sign of improvement. It means that the antibiotics are working, and for that, we are so incredibly thankful. His little body has endured so much that we will take these baby steps as huge improvements.

What hurts the most is how much his little body tells the story of his life. His back is hunched when he walks, likely because he spent most of his life being kept in a crate. He is the sweetest boy, gentle, soft, quiet, but you can see the sadness in him. He lets us touch him, pet him, kiss him… but he never looks truly happy. It’s like he’s always waiting for the moment someone will fail him again.

    He looks defeated.

All we want now is to show him, every single day, that he is safe, that he matters, and that he is deeply loved. He has had such a hard life, and he deserves to finally experience genuine kindness.

Thank you for caring about Rover, for rooting for him, and for giving him a chance when so many others didn’t. He needs all of us right now.

    Love,
    NYC Second Chance Rescue
