Saving Kill Pen or Auction Horses

Care For The Horses is a rescue and rehabilitation program that provides services to horses so that they will no longer have to suffer from abuse or neglect. We have started to help the horses that are in kill pens in Texas and Oklahoma.

Cost for rescuing these horses is fairly expensive with having to pay the "bail" fee price the meat buyer charges to get the horse, QT and trasnport back to AZ.

About $1,000 per horse. Help us help them!

Campaign Details

Horses as nice as this gelding who is only 10 years old show up in the kill pens. They are purchased by kill buyers at local auctions, or given to people by owners who are convinced that these people are going to give thier horse a "permanet" loving home. That is not true. Many people represent themselves that way to individuals who are giving away or selling their horses cheaply. The horse then goes to the kill pens where the "good samaritan" receives top dollar for the horse so it can be sold for meat.

It is usually through no fault of the horse that it ends up at the kill pens. Their fate is either to be purchased by someone saving them by paying their "bail" fee, the cost to buy them before they ship to Mexico for meat or they are shipped to Mexico in a long, hot trailer ride crowded with 40 other horses to their horrible death in Mexico.

Once a horse is bailed, it must be put into quarantine for 20-30 days to make sure all diseases have had a chance to process through their system. Many of these horses have pneumonia, strangles and coughs, snotty noses and runny eyes. After 20-30 days the horse is usually checked by the veteranarian who services that area and they are given their Coggins and Health Certificate to travel to their new home.

The cost to transport horses to Arizona to our rescue facility averages $350.

Once at our facility the horse is again quanratined for a short time in a quiet environment to get over the stress from the 18 hour ride from Texas to Arizona.

Evaluation is then done on the horse to find out if it is a riding horse, pasture companion or if it needs training.

By now the horse has also had dental work done and farrier work so they are feeling good and ready to find their new forever home through our program.

Care For The Horses operates solely on donations from individuals and businesses. Everyone is a volunteer and all the funds received go directly to operating our program services supporting the well being of the horses we serve. This program has been operating for 13 years.

Please visit our website www.careforthehorses.com to find out more about us.

Help us help these horses go from wearing USDA tags on the way to Mexico for slaughter to a good life enjoying being a trail horse, 4-H project horse for a child or a companion horse where they will be loved and cared for the rest of their life.

As part of this goal if we have funds available they will be used to purchase these horses at the local auctions by us not the kill buyers. Having available funds will also allow us to purchase the "cheap" horses listed on Craiglist, etc. before the kill buyers get there.

Thank you in advance for making a donation to help these horses who depend upon us to help them.
