Hit and Run Accident Dog Needs Surgery

Urgent help needed for Misha!

Misha needs your help! This little dog was hit by a car in Sacramento, CA and left on the side of the road to die. Luckily, she was found by a good samaritan who took her to a shelter, but no owner came to claim her. The shelter contacted AMAR to rescue her and we took her to an orthopedic specialist. Radiographs reveal numerous pelvic fractures with displacement, a left femoral fracture and possible fracture line through the left femoral neck region. She's been in a lot of pain and, though surgery is very expensive, it's her only chance at a pain-free life. Won't you please help us, help her by donating and sharing this campaign.

Misha is thought to be a three-year-old Maltese. We don't know what her life was like before, but she wasn't spayed and she looks like she may have had puppies recently, so she may have been from a puppy mill and may have been either dumped on the street or ran off.

As if being a puppy mill breeder dog wasn't enough, her world came crashing down even more when a car hit her. Her little 8-pound body bore the brunt of being hit by a car and several of her bones broke. The driver didn't stop to help, but luckily someone driving by saw her on the side of the road and took her to a shelter. No one was looking for her while there and she was in pain, because many shelters don't treat accidents or illnesses. She was given antibiotics and pain meds, but was still suffering. Luckily, they called us at American Maltese Association Rescue to see if we could take her and get the care she needed.

Our foster picked her up and got her into a specialist, where it was determined she needed surgery ASAP on her leg and pelvis. It's extremely expensive, but this little girl was failed by so many up until now, that we couldn't be yet another fail. She's having surgery done, today October 24th, and we're hoping you will consider donating towards the cost, estimated between $14,500 and $18,120. We have money to cover some of it, but are a long way from covering it all. Please consider donating, and whether you can or can't donate, please SHARE.  Thank you so much!

    02/11/2024 UPDATE:

It's time for a 2024 update on how Misha's doing. Her foster mom wrote this:
"Misha continues to run (pun intended) full steam ahead with her recovery. She is currently in rehab where she participates in various types of therapies, including water, laser and stretch.  According to her therapist, she is a happy participant and is making strides in her recovery.

At home, her personality is starting to emerge and she is settling down to my pack routine, though, ‘settling down’ may not be the appropriate term.  She is a bouncy little girl with high energy and does not let her so-called disabilities weigh her down.  Other than not yet consistently using her hind left leg, she can run and jump and keep up with the pack with ease.  We don’t yet know whether or not she will be able use her left, hind leg efficiently, as the surgery she endured has resulted in that particular leg being just a tad shorter than the other.  She attempts to play rough and tumble with my over-exuberant 1-year old mini-poodle pup, and despite their size difference, often wins their tug-of-war fights.  She’s also known to steal everyone’s treats any chance she gets.  She’s a smart little cookie and has already learned some basic commands and, to my dismay, to thwart any attempts to keep her contained.

Misha is a happy little pup who has not met a dog or person who was not her friend.  She lives for attention and belly rubs. It shouldn’t be long before we can find her furever home and the endless love that she so deserves.”

We don’t think she was spayed since she was a stray and we don’t see a spay scar so we’ll need to do that.
Your donations towards Misha's care have been life changing for her.  We can't thank you enough.  Her physical therapy costs are still ongoing and we've been using general funding that has come in. If you'd like to help us and her with those costs, you can still donate to this campaign or online on our website. Thank you  <3<3

    12/08/2023 UPDATE:

It's time for a new update on how Misha's doing. Just great!! She's feeling so much better and the hardest part is keeping her from being too active! She's started post-surgery rehabilitation with laser treatment which reduces pain and inflammation, accelerates healing, and promotes tissue regeneration. She must know it makes her feel better because she's so good at her sessions. We're very excited to learn that she'll also be starting Hydrotherapy, also known as aquatic therapy, involving the use of water to facilitate therapeutic exercises and promote healing. Everyone is very pleased with her progress.

We couldn't have helped Misha without your generous donations.  They covered all of the surgery and now we're using existing funds for her rehabilitation. Thank you again for being such wonderful supporters. <3<3

    11/12/2023 UPDATE:
Hi all. We wanted to share a terrific update on Misha. She's doing great!! She went back to have the staples removed and we were told that she was healing well. She's even going to begin some light physical therapy. That little girl is such a superstar! We think Misha knows her life has taken a turn for the much better. An enormous thank you to Linda Wolfe for fostering her. It's not easy when our dogs have major health issues, but it's very rewarding when they improve. We couldn't be happier...and...drumroll please! We reached our $14,000 goal to cover her surgery!! We had a ways to go and one of our very generous supporters donated the remaining $4,000 to bring us there! We can't thank him enough. We will still have ongoing vet bills for follow ups and PT, but that enormous surgery bill has been completely covered. Thank you all so much. Every donation got us there...from $5 to $500, and all in between, it all added up. You are all amazing and have made the difference in this girl's future. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! ❤ ❤

    10/31 UPDATE

We're so excited!! Our fundraiser for Misha's surgery has hit 74%!!! We're almost there because of all of your generosity. We also received some donations through Facebook donors and some mail-in checks. We're getting very close to our goal and can't thank you all enough for your love for little Misha. She's doing well at her foster home. Settling in and perking up. We've bought a lot of supplies to make her more comfortable. She's got the heart of a warrior showing us how much she appreciates being saved.

If you already donated to her care, we thank you and hope you might share our campaign on social media to get the rest of the funds.  https://www.givinggrid.com/Hit-And-Run-Misha-Needs-Surgery If you haven't donated yet, now is the time to help reach the finish line. It doesn't have to be a big amount, even $5 and $10 donations have added up to get us where we are.

Thank you all again. We can't wait to see Misha enjoying her new life.

    10/28 UPDATE:

Hit-and-run AMAR foster, Misha got to go home from the hospital!!! After hours of grueling surgery, our amazing foster mom, and board member, Linda, picked her up a day later and brought her home. Here’s a video of this sweet girl. What a scar!

She had 4 surgeries! We got the invoice from the hospital and it was $14,000, which was their lowest estimate and hadn’t included the FHO, so though it’s expensive, they discounted in many places. We’re at nearly half our goal. Please, if you haven’t done so already, donate, SHARE, spread the word. Misha’s got a long road to recovery. Thank you to all who gave. Your kindness helps us make part of our world a better place. ❤️ You can donate here on FB or here’s the link to donate through Giving Grid and find out more: https://www.givinggrid.com/Hit-And-Run-Misha-Needs-Surgery

TUESDAY NIGHT, 10/24  We wanted to update you all. Misha is out of surgery. The orthopedist had to perform 4 surgeries, repairing the fractures on both sides of the pelvis, a femur fracture in one leg, as well as an FHO, which is a femoral head ostectomy. The FHO removes the femoral head and neck of the femur in order to eliminate the bone-on-bone contact of the hip. It was discovered that she needed this once surgery was underway. She did very well throughout the procedures and she'll go home with significant pain meds and have a long road of physical therapy ahead of her.

Thank you all for your concern and support. Because of the FHO, the the invoice for services will likely be higher. For those who donated, thank you so much. For those who haven't yet, the need is clear.  Thank you all.
