Buttercup's story is one that will end in survival and resilience. In Spring 2024, she was rescued from a New Jersey shelter along with her "family member," Peppa. While Peppa was facing her own medical issues, Buttercup’s situation was proving to be more complex. ASCZ had to wait for the legal battle to be over before much medical help could be given. Buttercup's previous "home" was part of a cruel and elaborate breeding scheme. At only 2.5 years old, it is unknown how many times she was bred, but it's clear she endured immense suffering.
For much of her life, Buttercup was confined to a crate where she was forced to sit in her own waste. As a result, her feet were covered in sores, and her bulldog folds were inflamed and infected. She was both malnourished and overweight. Buttercup was likely living on human scraps of food at times or moldy kibble.
Buttercup has developed several medical problems, including gingival hyperplasia (a painful gum condition) and a hernia, likely caused by overbreeding. In addition to these ailments, she has been experiencing eye pain and has scratches on her eyes from constantly rubbing them. Buttercup's eye surgery, Blepharoplasty, is a more extensive entropion eye surgery in which they will reconstruct her eyelids. She may also need to use eyedrops for the remainder of her life. If she does not have this surgery, she could potentially lose her vision. The eye surgery alone will cost over $3,000. Buttercup's spay and hernia repair will be close to $1,000 and her dental will be at least $1300. This is all in addition to the money already spent on basic care and vetting for sweet Buttercup.
The poor and inhumane treatment that these dogs suffered alongside of Buttercup is unacceptable. However, she will endure!
