Bowie was having a lot of trouble breathing and was taken to Den Herder Veterinary Hospital in Waterloo on Saturday, Feb. 4th, 2017. The X-ray showed a severe diaphragmatic hernia. The diaphragm is a muscle that sits underneath the rib cage and keeps the abdominal cavity separate from the chest cavity that holds the lungs and heart. All of the organs from the abdominal cavity had migrated into the chest cavity and were pressing on the lungs causing his difficulty breathing. He was taken to the Eastern Iowa Emergency Vet Center in Cedar Rapids because he needed to be on oxygen 24/7 awaiting surgery. The surgery would save his life and had to be done by a board certified surgeon due to the complexity of the surgery and the possible complications from surgery.
On Sunday his surgery was scheduled for Monday or Tuesday. He is resting comfortably on oxygen and is even eating by himself.
On Monday he continued to rest comfortably on oxygen. Surgery scheduled for early Tuesday morning.
Surgery was performed early Tuesday morning. The left lung is collapsed. All of the organs in the chest cavity were successfully moved back into the abdominal cavity. The diaphragm was too damaged to repair and mesh was used to repair it. His heart did stop during surgery but they brought him back quickly. His recovery has been slow so far. But he is stable. He's breathing. He's sitting up on his own. They will know more in 24 hours. Later in the day on Tuesday he has mostly been laying around. But good news is his vitals are all good. He is stable.
On Wednesday he is up and walking around. He's doing so well they took the heart monitor off of him. He is still on pain meds but they're going to reduce the amount. His breathing is still rapid, but it's not open mouth anymore. They said he's doing really great. They want to keep an eye on him for at least another 48 hours. He is not out of the woods yet but he is doing incredibly well and as long as his progress continues they are very optimistic.
Bowie is such a sweet and wonderful cat. We decided to do the surgery because money should not determine if you live or die. Prayers are needed for his full recovery. Donations are needed to help pay his bill. We need help to pay his bill. So far it has cost $6,000 and they expect the final bill to be around $7,600.
