Another Victim of Abuse

Urgent help needed for Tomas!

We received an urgent plea for help. A biker riding alongside the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, NY, spotted a dog in critical condition.

The dog is covered in new and old bite wounds; his face is extremely swollen. It's hard to say if he was hit by a car or if this injury was inflicted by a human

He is dangerously dehydrated, and his body is sunburned. We have no idea how long ago he was dumped but you can count every bone in his body.

When the biker called, our president and founder, Jennifer Brooks, raced to the scene. This is the second time in one week that she has rushed to save a dog on the side of a road in Brooklyn.

Jennifer reports that despite being able to stand at first, his body soon gave out, and he couldn’t even walk to her car. She had to carry his starved and neglected body to safety.

We have named him Tomas, after surgeon Tomas Infernuso, who has a 24 hour hospital
and is waiting for his arrival. We do not know the extent of his injuries, but we are praying we can fix the wrongs done to him.

We need your help in providing him with the medical care he desperately needs. We will update everyone as soon as possible.

NYC Second Chance Rescue

About the Organization

In 2009, NYC Second Chance Rescue began as a small dream, founded on the firm belief that all animals deserve love and care, and that no animal should ever be subjected to abuse, neglect or homelessness. All proceeds go directly to the animals, and to date, we have relied solely on donations from loyal supporters. Our mission is to offer a second chance to those animals less fortunate — those with critical medical, emotional or behavioral issues.

Last week, a biker spotted Tomas along the Belt Parkway in terrible condition and contacted us for help. Tomas's entire face was swollen and bruised, his body covered in new and old bite wounds. On top of that, he was suffering from dehydration from roaming in the extreme heat.

Tomas spent several days at a 24-hour hospital with Dr. Infernuso, where he was treated aggressively for the infection in his face and had a whole-body CT Scan. Tomas had elevations of the liver and kidneys due to dehydration and a high white blood cell count. He was weak and refusing to eat. Once stable, Jennifer Brooks personally transported Tomas to our partner animal hospital in Little Neck.

We are happy to announce that Tomas is officially ready to be discharged from the hospital and transitioned into a home. Tomas needs a foster home while we look for an adopter. He is still very underweight, and his paws are splayed from a condition called "cage feet," indicating he was kept in a cage too small for him. He is an incredibly sweet dog who just hasn't experienced anything GOOD in his life.

Please visit https://nycsecondchancerescue.org to apply to foster or adopt Tomas. All August, dog adoption fees are reduced by $100 for "Clear The Shelters" Month.

Thank you to everyone who donated toward Tomas's care. We are also so grateful for your prayers. We couldn't do this without your help.

    With love and gratitude,
    NYC Second Chance Rescue
