Two seniors abandoned

Urgent help needed for Slim & Shady!

We received a disturbing plea for help from a woman who found two dogs thrown away like garbage in a dumpster. Once we saw their photos, we realized that these dogs had recently been posted on social media. The story was that the "owner" tried to surrender them at three different municipal shelters, and each shelter turned them away due to unprecedented over-crowding

There is absolutely no excuse for what this man did. The police have his information, and an investigation is underway.

The condition in which they were found was heartbreaking.

But let’s take a moment to plant a seed; NYC, the greatest city in the world or so they say, is so bad right now that people are letting their animals loose on busy streets or tying them to poles because every shelter is at critical capacity.

There are no low-cost spay and neuter programs, the cost of veterinarian care is astronomical, and the shelter staff and volunteers are emotionally exhausted by the horrors.

If this is happening in NYC, can you imagine what is happening nationwide? The suffering? The euthanasia rates? The abuse that goes unreported?

Until mandatory spay and neuter laws are enforced, low-cost/ free spay and neuter services are made readily accessible to the general public, and animal cruelty is taken seriously, we will be facing these exact same issues for years to come.

This is the third case we have dealt with in the past few weeks of animals being tied to poles or dumped around the city.

President and Founder, Jennifer Brooks, immediately took the two dogs into our care and brought them to the vet. We named the Boston Terrier Slim; he is 11 years old and has tumors on his scrotum and anus, a heart murmur, and dental disease. The wire hair terrier is Shady, who is nine years old, underweight, and has severe dental disease.

We will provide them with everything they need, and we promise them that they will never suffer again, that they will never be discarded, and that they will only know love and kindness.

NYC Second Chance Rescue

About the Organization

In 2009, NYC Second Chance Rescue began as a small dream, founded on the firm belief that all animals deserve love and care, and that no animal should ever be subjected to abuse, neglect or homelessness. All proceeds go directly to the animals, and to date, we have relied solely on donations from loyal supporters. Our mission is to offer a second chance to those animals less fortunate — those with critical medical, emotional or behavioral issues.

Slim and Shady are at our Adoption Center, and we are head over heels. This bonded pair of seniors has taken our shelter by storm. They love their little walks, gobble up their meals, and give the gentlest kisses. After being pulled from a dumpster, Slim and Shady are so grateful to be safe and warm with full bellies.

Slim, the Boston Terrier, is 11 years old, and his brother, Shady is 9. They are friendly with dogs and cats, great on leash, and so easygoing. Slim has a mass on his anus that will need surgery and both he and his brother, Shady, will need a dental.

These boys are undeniably bonded, and we are seeking an immediate foster home for them. They’re such easy, happy boys, and we’d love to see them leave their kennels behind and transition into a wonderful home. To foster Slim and Shady, please fill out an application at nycscr.org/foster.

    With Love and Gratitude,
    NYC Second Chance Rescue
