Emergency Treatment/Heart Surgery

Urgent help needed for Athena!

Athena needs your help! She is currently in heart failure as a result of an infectious pericarditis. She is having heart surgery to remove part of her pericardial sac to prevent further fluid buildup on the heart and extensive infectious disease testing.

Please help this wonderfully sweet fur kid and donate whatever you can. Sharing with family and friends helps too. Thank you!

Athena was part of the Pittie Paw Rescue seizure by Knox County Animal Shelter in Knox County, Ohio. It was obvious she was neglected, emaciated and had severe untreated allergies when she came into our rescue. She is the most precious loving girl, despite all she has gone through.

Athena is being treated at The Ohio State Veterinary Hospital in Columbus Ohio. She initially had x-rays, lasix, echo-cardiogram and 200 CC of fluid pulled from her heart. She'll be getting blood work, 4DX to test for infectious diseases, urinalysis, biopsy of fluid and pericardial sac and a CT scan prior to her heart surgery. They will be performing a pericardial window. A pericardial window is a procedure done on the sac around the heart. Surgically removing a small part of the sac lets doctors drain excess fluid from the sac to keep fluid from building up, until they can diagnose the issue causing the right sided heart failure.

Once again, we would greatly appreciate your help.

Even a $5 donation goes a long way! And if you're not able to donate (even if you are), please remember to share with others you think might want to help too!

On behalf of Athena, thank you!

    Athena Update

First of all, we want to thank all our supporters for your love and support for Athena. We can not begin to express our gratitude for the outpouring of support and Athena thanks you as well.

So with that being said, we have some news to share with all of you. Athena was seen by The OSU-VMC Integrated Oncology Service on 8/12/2019 for a post-surgical recheck and suture removal. Athena has been doing very well at home since undergoing a left thoracotomy and pericardial window and Pleural port placement on 8/2/2019. Etiology was originally thought to be lymphoma, but histopathology yields no findings of round cell neoplasia at this time. NO CANCER DIAGNOSIS!!

We are so happy that Athena had a positive turn of events and the episode was an unknown etiology. We will continue to monitor her with our vet and OSU.

    Thank you for your support!!

    Best regards,

First of all, thank you to everybody for the support, love and donations for our precious girl, Athena.

Originally when we first took her to the Ohio State University vet, they appeared confident at the time that Athena was having what they called infectious pericarditis. She was having fluid in her pericardial sac that was causing her to go into congestive heart failure. The echocardiogram revealed her heart structure was normal. We opted for the pericardial window in order to relieve the pressure it was putting on her heart and to prevent any more fluid buildup.

The fluid that was extracted from the pericardial sac had what they called round cells and this is where everything changed. We were told the round cells are normally indicative of cancer but would have to do cytology and send the fluid and part of the pericardial sac they removed out for pathology report. In talking with the doctor in depth, the cytology found neoplastic cells which is indicative of cancer. We were told where the cells were very rare and uncommon. She had no tumors anywhere.

After further conversations with the physicians including today, they are pretty confident Athena has lymphoma. The pathology reports will come back and give us an idea of what type of lymphoma she has. These reports should be back in 1-2 days.

In the meantime, Athena is resting and doing well despite everything. We had an in-depth conversation with the oncologist this morning and we are working on getting her home with us, treating her and making sure she is comfortable, so we can spoil her for what time she has left. We will be providing updates from here on out as we get them from the doctors and our visits with Athena. We know she has a lot of people who love her and want the best for her, despite everything she has been through.

Again thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring, sharing and donating for her care.

Please keep Athena in your thoughts and prayers.

    Best regards,
