Saving Solomon

Urgent help needed for Solomon!

Sweet senior Solomon suffers from pododermatitis, an autoimmune disease that affects the paw pads. This can be managed with medication, but Solo never received any vet care despite years of suffering. His paws are ulcerated, deformed, and painful, and he can't walk on them. Solo will need a lot of care. We are raising money for surgery to remove damaged tissue on his feet. Despite his suffering, Solo is incredibly friendly and just wants to be loved. He will stand on his bleeding feet to ask you to pet him. Please help us help Solomon by sharing and making a donation. We thank you very much on his behalf! Warning: graphic photos.

Solomon's Story

Solomon was born in downtown Martinsburg, West Virginia, where there is an enormous stray and feral cat population. Solo's momma was a stray who was taken in by a well-meaning woman to have her kittens. Sadly, only Solo survived. As he grew up, he developed pododermatitis, an autoimmune disease that causes the paw pads to swell and become painful. Usually this can be managed with medication, but unfortunately Solomon's caretaker was struggling herself, which prevented her from seeking any vet care for Solomon over his 10+ years.

Operation Press Paws meets Solomon

Operation Press Paws first met Solomon's owner while doing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) for feral cats on his block. Once we heard Solomon's story, we immediately wanted to help. At first, we thought that providing medication would be enough to help Solo. Then, volunteers visited him for the first time. We were shocked and heartbroken by the condition he was in. Without treatment, all four of his paws have become raw and ulcerated, with large amounts of tissue protruding from inside the paw pads. They split and bleed badly, and he can’t walk on them. He can barely even stand. He cannot use a litter box. He has had to keep his paws folded up underneath him, upside down, in an attempt to keep the pressure off them. His chest was crusted with dried blood from resting against his wounded paws. Seeing him like that, there were tears on our cheeks and no question what we had to do. We immediately took Solomon to the vet hospital, where he was triaged and started treatment.

Solomon's Surgery

While at the vet, Solomon was anemic from blood loss due to his bleeding feet and a serious flea infestation. His bloodwork revealed that he is also diabetic. Diabetic kitties should not be given steroids if at all possible, which makes treating Solo's paws extra challenging. Solo is currently in boarding at the vet, where he is receiving insulin, undergoing laser therapy, and having his bandages changed daily. He will need a lot of care to get healthy. Because his paws are in such bad shape, they won't be able to heal on their own. We are raising money for surgery to remove the damaged tissue on his feet, which we can't afford, but would give Solo the best chance at the pain-free retirement he desperately deserves after years of suffering. During surgery, the surgeon excises the damaged, protruding tissue and sutures the paw pads closed. When they heal, they are back to the soft pink pillows we expect to see on our kitties.

Saving Solomon

A wonderful sanctuary has promised Solomon a spot when he is ready to be released from the vet hospital. We are so excited and thankful that he will be well-cared for and loved for the rest of his life. In the meantime, the sanctuary is generously partnering up with us to help cover the costs of Solomon's medical care. Together, we are fundraising with a goal of $2000, which the vet estimates will pay for Solo's daily care, insulin, laser therapy, and surgery. Despite his suffering, Solo is incredibly friendly and just wants to be loved. He will stand on his bleeding feet to ask you to pet him. Please help us help Solomon by sharing and making a donation to his surgery fund. We thank you very much on his behalf!

We are so excited to announce that Solomon's paw surgery to address his untreated pododermatitis was a big success! The wonderful Dr. Brown at Hoof and Paw Veterinary Services in Purcellville, VA performed two rounds of surgery on Solo's paws, and now they are almost completely healed! He is due to get his stitches out in a few days, and then he will no longer need his bandages and he will be medically cleared for ADOPTION!

Through lots of hard work and love, the vet staff have performed magic we didn’t think was possible. Not only are Solo's paws healthy and usable for the first time in years, his mouth ulcers are healed, his skin allergies have cleared up on his new diet, and best of all, his bloodwork is perfect — he is no longer on insulin and he’s doing great! He’s had a full dental and his unhealthy teeth have been removed. Now this sweet senior just needs a loving home where he can spend his retirement in comfort. We are very happy to say that his "special needs" are much fewer than expected because he's no longer diabetic! He will not need any special care other than his prescription diet and one medication, both of which he will need for the rest of his life. (His medication, called cyclosporine, will moderate his immune system to keep his pododermatitis from flaring up.) Solo Other than this lifelong autoimmune condition, Solomon is in tip top shape!

Everyone who meets Solo absolutely adores him. He is a favorite at the vet hospital for his super sweet and laid-back disposition. He's also spending some weekends in a foster home to give him a break from the vet, and he is snuggly and loving as can be. He's remained amazingly affectionate and gentle despite years of suffering, and through all his treatment, including having his feet bathed and bandaged daily for several months. Such a good-natured boy! And very handsome if we do say so ourselves. Look at those golden eyes! Solo was born deaf, but he doesn't let it affect him in any way. The only thing you will notice is that he can't hear himself when he talks, and he does love to talk (we were told his mama was a Siamese kitty)! So you will hear Solo's thoughts LOUD & CLEAR -- but you'll love him for it!

We are so incredibly grateful to you for helping us pay for Solo's surgery and other vet care! So we are thrilled to say that our vet bill for this sweet old guy has been settled, with only a few more charges to go after his sutures are removed. Now Solo needs your help one more time: to find him his perfect forever home! Everyone who meets him loves him, so be sure to tell all your friends about this absolute gem of a kitty who needs a home! Solomon is currently located in Purcellville, VA but anyone willing to make arrangements to adopt is welcome to apply!

Thank you so much for contributing to our campaign to save Solomon. We are SO excited to share that after a slow start, Solomon’s paws are finally showing some major improvement, thanks to the fantastic vet and staff who are caring for him day in and day out. Here are his paws when he first came into rescue about a month ago:

And these are his paws today:

Just look at those cute toe beans!

Now that Solo's condition has improved, the vet is planning to schedule his surgery soon so he can get on his way to full healing. In the meantime, we have more big news: Solo will be looking for a forever home after he recovers fully! While he still has the love and support of the wonderful Cats Crossing Sanctuary, the vet has advised that a single-cat home would be safest for him because his immune system is compromised. So, we are asking for your help once again: Please spread Solomon’s story and help us find the perfect retirement home for this unbelievably sweet senior... He may be 12, but he’s just starting his new life, and he wants to share it with a loving family! Solomon is currently located in Purcellville, Virginia, but he is willing to relocate. :)

GIVING TUESDAY: AN UPDATE ON SOLOMON

#GivingTuesday is here, and we are so thankful for the kindness and generosity you have shown us and OPP kitty Solomon! Solo remains at the vet for round-the-clock care, including daily insulin injections, bandage changes, and laser therapy to speed up the healing process. Once his paws have healed sufficiently, the vet will proceed with the surgery to remove damaged tissue and close up his paw pads, which will give Solo a whole new life. Imagine the freedom of being able to walk, groom, and simply sit without pain after being a prisoner in your own body for so long. We can't wait to see Solomon's sweet, expressive face when he realizes he is free!

While Solo heals, we are continuing our efforts to help other cats like him. Although Solo was living indoors, we have discovered that his former neighborhood, and specifically his block, is a gathering place for cats due to concerned residents that leave food out for them. In addition to many feral cats (some which we have TNR'd and others we still need to trap), there are several severely neglected former pets that hang out on and around Solomon's old stoop. There is no question that we are going to try to help these cats, not only because they are suffering but because they have been abandoned and let down by people in the worst way. However, this is a time-consuming and expensive process. Most of these cats, like Solo, are seniors whose basic needs - things like food, water, parasite prevention, and medical care - have not been met for years, if ever. They usually have numerous health problems and need a lot of vet care.

    A TRAGIC SITUATION

We are heartbroken to say that we can't always save these kitties. Meet Leo.  This is a photo of him taken several months ago:

According to the neighbors, Leo used to live in the house right next door to Solomon. He had a family and was an indoor pet; however, his owners had him declawed, and like many declawed cats, he started to avoid the litterbox. So Leo's owners tossed him outside with only a soggy cardboard box on the porch for shelter. Over the years, they stopped feeding him, and he had to fend for himself, long forgotten by his former "owners."  We met Leo over the holiday, after a Good Samaritan found him near Solo's old house, desperately ill and alone. She kindly took him home and reached out to us for help getting vet care. We immediately authorized the finder to bring him to our vet. Sadly, by the time he found his Good Samaritan, Leo was just too sick. His body temperature was too low to read, he was emaciated, and his eyes were sunken from dehydration. His mouth was severely ulcerated and the pain had prevented him from eating or drinking for days. He was a senior cat, and late-stage kidney failure was suspected. Following our vet’s recommendation, we made the hard decision to humanely euthanize Leo. We are heartbroken that we couldn’t do more to help this sweet old man. But, we are also so grateful to his rescuer for taking him in so he did not have to die alone and suffering. We will not forget Leo. Losing him has made us all the more determined to help the other neglected cats in the area. If you’d like to join us, please share our campaign and consider making a donation in memory of Leo.

Thank you so much for everything you have done to help Solomon and the other cats like him. Together, we can celebrate Solomon's new life, grieve for Leo, and most importantly, give the next cat a happier story.
