Puppy Doodles Needs Heart Surgery

Urgent help needed for Doodles!

Doodles is a 9-10 month old Maltese/Yorkie mix. She desperately needs life-saving heart surgery. She has a genetic heart defect called PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus). If left untreated, dogs diagnosed with it have a greater than 50% mortality rate by one year of age. Because of PDA, Doodles has an enlarged heart and a category 6 heart murmur, on a scale of 1 to 6. She has been experiencing CHF and will not survive unless surgery is done soon.

As healthy as Doodles looks in her photo, she's a very sick girl.
She came into rescue as a foster with American Maltese Association Rescue(AMAR) from North Carolina. She originally came from a home where she was severely matted, and had ear mites and an eye infection. A couple who got her out of there, had her treated for those ailments, but they then found out she might have PDA and they couldn't afford the surgery because of their own health issues. They then contacted rescue.  She was taken into AMAR in Virginia, by her foster mom, Peggy, and brought to a cardiologist on 7/24,  where an echocardiogram was done and diagnosis was confirmed. They are recommending surgery to correct the vessel malfunction.

AMAR cannot imagine not helping this puppy, so we have given a commitment to the surgery, scheduled to be performed on Monday, July 31 at 8am.  But we've taken in many dogs who need costly medical procedures lately and this is a very expensive surgery. The amount we're asking for also covers the cardio exam that took place. And that's why we're coming to you. Please make a donation to help Doodles get her life-saving surgery. The cardiologist believes she will lead a normal life if she has this operation. Please donate any amount you can and remember to put up your dog's photo or your name on the grid to show Doodles some love.  We hope you will share this and  encourage your friends and family to do so, too. It's tax deductible!

8/24 UPDATE -- WE MADE IT!!!   We couldn't wait to share the good news.  WE MET OUR GOAL FOR DOODLE'S FUNDRAISER!!  We want to thank everyone so much for donating to saving this darling girl's life with the surgery and especially wanted to give a "bark out" to an anonymous donor who closed the gap two days ago to take us to the top!!  Doodles is doing great and will have some more follow up visits with her cardiologist but it looks like she's going to lead a happy, healthy life.  You are all AWESOME!  We couldn't do it without you.

New Doodle Alert (8/14): For those who have been wondering what has been going on with little Miss Doodle, here is an update. Miss Doodle has been progressing very well and today returned to the Cardiologist for her follow up to check her stitches and to listen to her heart. He said she is doing great and did not hear a heart murmur which is what we were hoping for. She is able to return to normal activity (don't tell anyone but she's been working on that for awhile). There has been no more heavy panting and she is picking at her foster brothers and sisters trying to initiate play. She will return to the Cardiologist in November for another echocardiogram to ensure her little heart is functioning normally.

We did not reach our donations goal but every dollar helped and we want to thank those who donated and for all the prayers. She is an amazing sweet little girl.

NEW UPDATE:  We're very excited to update everyone about Doodles' progress.  She really turned a corner the day after her surgery and she is now home with her foster mom!   She's eating well, was sleeping quite a bit after the surgery but is starting to get some of her spunk back and she's as sweet as ever preferring her foster mom's lap to anywhere in the house. Peggy is such a perfect mom to her. As always the hardest part of surgical recovery for a puppy is not letting them act like a puppy!  Her incision looks good and she goes back for follow up on August 14th.  We know Doodles has a lot of fans out there and love being able to spread good news about her.

And we have some more good news.  We've reached 50% of our goal on Giving Grid today!! We've also gotten in some generous additional donations outside of Giving Grid from people who prefer paying by check and that doesn't show up in the Giving Grid total. So we're closer to our goal than it looks here and with some more donations we think we'll make it.  Your outpouring of love and support make our choice to take on costly procedures so much easier. Saving a life is one thing; affording the medical care to do so is another.  You've been there for us for both. Thank you!

Doodles underwent PDA surgery at 1pm today. Thankfully she is OUT OF SURGERY, but is in GUARDED CONDITION. When the surgeon tied off the blood vessel, the heart rate dropped precipitously, but they were able to normalize it.  Doodles will be watched throughout the night and will be in our care for 3-4 months before being adoptable, as per her surgeon's suggestion.  Please keep her in your thoughts.

And we have not met our goal yet, so please donate if you haven't already and SHARE this campaign to help cover the cost of this lifesaving surgery.  Doodles thanks you from the bottom of her repaired heart.
