LEAD TESTING SAVES RAPTOR LIVES

Lead poisoning can be deadly in birds.

Diagnosing lead poisoning and treating it as soon as possible can save the lives of native Illinois raptors such as the Bald Eagle.

You can help, one beautiful bird at a time, by donating $10.00 for a lead testing strip.

Help us fill the Giving Grid and perhaps even exceed our goal!

Donate and upload your picture!  Then share our campaign with your family and friends.

Campaign Details

The Illinois Raptor Center examines and draws blood on all raptors admitted to our wildlife hospital.  That is well over 200 raptors a year.

Blood tests tell us if the bird is dehydrated, anemic, or poisoned by an anticoagulant so we can give proper treatment immediately.  These same blood samples are later collected and sent to Millikin University for raptor research projects by biology students.

However, these blood samples cannot tell us if a bird has lead poisoning.  The Illinois Raptor Center has a lead testing machine at our wildlife hospital but we are nearly out of test strips.

One test strip, to test one raptor, costs $10.00.  Strips are sold in kits of 50.  We need to purchase at least one kit as soon as possible.

Will you help by donating a test strip for one or more of our future raptor patients?  Being able to diagnose lead poisoning and treating it as soon as possible can save a life.  Will you help save the life of beautiful raptor downed by lead poisoning?
