A few days ago, we received a call about a dog in an emergency situation. Her name is Kyra, and she is 3 years old. Her owner had recently gotten her from a woman who had a newborn and no longer could deal with a dog, too. The original owner had gotten Kyra to breed her, and kept her either tied out back or in the cellar. Poor Kyra didn't have much of a life, so it was a blessing that she was given up.
Kyra's new owner was a kind-hearted man who had been doing both dog and horse rescue on his own for many years. When a stall door was left accidently open, Kyra got in with a horse and was kicked breaking her femur. The new owner rushed her to the emergency vet. He tried to get a loan, but unfortunately he could not afford the $2000 cost of the stay/pain management from the emergency hospital by the time he called or the surgery, which costs between $5500-$6500 for a Board Certified surgeon so he asked us to take her and save her life.
Though that is a huge amount of money, we just couldn't let a nice dog die without helping. We know we have a wonderful group of GSD lovers who move mountains to help a dog in need, and we're hoping you will all help with this mountainous bill.
Kyra is in surgery as I type this, and I have to tell you things are shaky. The first plate went on well, but when the surgeon tried the second plate, she found there were many micro-fractures in the bone and it shattered. She will try again, but there is already enough blood loss that Kyra is almost at the point of danger. She may need to give up and amputate the leg. We are hoping not, but if it saves her life, then we are all for it.
We will keep you all up to date on how Kyra is doing. Please send healing energy and prayers for Kyra to pull through this difficult surgery.
We will keep you updated.

Update on Kira:
We just heard from the surgeon that she was able to get one plate
secured very well. The lower plate is where they had the issue with a fissure fracturing when they tried to connect the plate. They were able to flip the limb over and get in enough screws to secure it. There was another fissure underneath, so the lower plate is not as secure as they would like, but it gives a chance for the leg to heal.
One of the screws seems to be interfering with her elbow movement so they are going back in to shorten it now. Kyra's heart rate is still elevated, so that is a concern. The surgeon is calling in a veterinary criticalist to increase Kyra's chances for recovery and see if she needs a transfusion as she is loosing a lot of blood.
We will know more soon...it's been a long day worrying about her and appreciate all your support, thoughts and prayers.

Update 3/3
Kyra had a long, difficult surgery. There were complications and a lot of blood loss, but she came through the surgery and is stable! We're hopeful that the plates will hold and her leg will heal without any issues. The surgeon will reassess Kyra in the morning.
Poor girl has had a tough time of it today.
