Hope for Harriet

Urgent help needed for Harriet!

Harriet came to us from a shelter in Tennessee, where she was dumped by a family "who didn't want to deal with her." She has genetic defects to her right paw and skull, oversized canines, a jaw that is misplaced, pneumonia and mange. It will take a few surgeries to get her to the adoption stage.

For now, she's in a loving foster home getting great care and playing with her foster siblings, but we need your help to make her better!

Please help her!

Harriet, a 10-month old yellow lab mix, came to Grafelman Farms Rescue from a shelter in Tennessee, where she was dumped at the end of the day by a family "who didn't want to deal with her."

Among the issues we knew she had when we agreed to take her in:

  • A deformed front foot that she uses for balance but cannot currently use to walk.
  • A damaged skull and issues with breathing, with a possible history of seizures.

Once we got her to Whitney Animal Hospital, we discovered she also has mange, pneumonia, a misaligned jaw (wry mouth) and problems with her good front foot. Through it all, she is sweet tempered, happy, and affectionate.

We know we can make her life better with help from you! Please donate and share her campaign with others you think might want to help too!

If we help her gain function and reduce her chances of chronic pain, we know this sweet girl will get a happy forever home!

We have some exciting updates on Harriet! After great thought and a lot of discussions with additional experts, Dr. Hayes at Whitney Vet decided that an amputation was not in Harriet's best interests, largely because her damaged left leg couldn't handle all the weight. She worked with OrthoPets in Colorado to develop a hybrid orthotic/prosthetic so she can use her paw and support her weight. This should greatly reduce the risk of osteoarthritis as she gets older.

The device had to go back to CO for some adjustments, but this is her using it on her very first day! She'll be running in no time. Here's a video of her using it! Thank you to everyone who helped us make this possible. She still has a ways to go, but she's getting there!

An update on Harriet’s situation. Thanks so much to Dr. Hayes and Whitney Veterinary Hospital for taking on her case and helping us! The x-rays marked R are who badly deformed front leg and L her other leg. On the right leg, her ankle basically isn’t attached and her radius is off doing its own thing. The plan is to amputate but leave a stump so a prosthesis can be fitted to help support her left leg.

Her left leg has a bowed out radius and ulna and a very short humerus, making her front end several inches shorter than her back and will cause arthritis. The plan is to release the ulna to help reduce the arthritis and to possibly do a lengthening of her humerus.

She will have two, possibly three surgeries and needs to have a prosthesis, so we are hoping to raise more funds for her. Thanks everyone who has supported her so far!

Thank you to everyone who has donated for sweet Harriet! We are going to make her life as functional and pain free as possible, and can’t do that without your help. We are getting a plan of action together and plan to start surgeries on August 6.

    Thank you for your support,

    Harriet & Grafelman Farms Rescue

We can’t believe it! We’ve made it to our goal in a few days! Harriet’s pneumonia appears to be getting better with the antibiotics and we can’t wait until Thursday 7/25 when we can sedate her for x rays to get a better idea of the plan of action. We will keep you updated with what we learn!

Harriet is the sweetest, kindest girl deserving of love and a pain-free life. We will work hard to make that a reality for her!

    Thanks again!
