Cecelia was a stray turned into the local kill shelter in the heat of a North Carolina summer. At first look, this sad girl was clearly emaciated, but her swollen belly told an all too familiar story. She was pregnant, VERY pregnant and close to delivery. The fate of the puppies was dire, since the shelter would spay her and each would be euthanized, if a rescue did not step in. Luckily, Second Chance was there that day, and we agreed to take momma in. In addition to being pregnant, she was also heartworm positive, which meant that she would need to be treated after the puppies were weaned.
She was very shy at first. Her skin had sores on it and she was not eating well, which was unusual for an expectant mom. Not long after intake, Cecelia went through an exhausting labor of nearly 24 hours and eleven puppies were born. Sadly, one was stillborn, but the other 10 were healthy.
They grew quickly and weeks later were starting to eat solid food. One day, Cecelia was lethargic, not eating and vomiting. A vet visit confirmed that she was developing a uterine infection and had to be spayed urgently. Fortunately, she healed well and has been able to put on some much needed weight. Last week she underwent her heartworm treatment, which consisted of back-to-back injections of Immiticide during a 2-day hospital stay. She is currently undergoing a 30-day recovery and needs to be kept relatively quiet during this time in order to prevent any heart complications as a result of the treatment.
