Open Chest Surgery Needed Now

Urgent help needed for Cocoa!

Cocoa is a one year old baby girl. Without surgery, she has only months to live! Her Echocardiogram revealed that she has a PDA (see below), which results in heart failure and death. If Cocoa receives no treatment she will likely go into heart failure and die within six months. If she has surgery soon, her prognosis is great for a normal healthy life.

Please help us give Cocoa the life she deserves by making a small donation! Anything will help.

Please help us save Cocoa!!

We pulled Cocoa from an overcrowded kill shelter, because she had no hope for a future there... We knew she suffered from a unknown heart condition, but vowed we would not let her final days be in a shelter.

Cocoa has since seen several vets and a cardiologist and has undergone X-Rays and an Echocardiogram and she has been diagnosed with heart condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Her only option is open chest surgery. Due to her age (1 year) it's urgent that we perform this surgery immediately, as most dogs with this condition do not live to be a year old... we are literally on borrowed time.

Please consider donating or sharing!

A little about Cocoa...

She is a precious little Maltese girl, weighing only 5 lbs. She has a sweet playful personality and shows her affection with lots of kisses. She has gained the attention of many of our Facebook followers and has received many comments on how much she looks like a little Ewok!! She has been enjoying being a dog (she doesn't know she's sick) and playing and running with the other big dogs. But mostly she enjoys lap time.

Even though prognosis with surgery is excellent, the surgery is very expensive. We have been quoted a price of $3,600-$4,200. If we do nothing, she will be fortunate to live another 6 months.

Even if we cannot provide surgery for this deserving girl we will make sure her last few months will be full of love! We believe she deserves a full life and hope we can get the support of others who feel as strongly as we do! What price do we put on a life?

We have included information below on PDA and hope you will consider helping us with this life saving surgery.

What is Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)?

•PDA is the failure of a large blood vessel, the ductus arteriosus, to close just after birth.

•In the fetus, this vessel is normal and allows blood to bypass the lungs since the lungs are not used during development in the uterus. This vessel runs from the aorta to the pulmonary artery.

•At birth, the vessel should close within hours, directing blood to flow into the newly inflated lungs.

•PDA is the most frequently seen congenital defect in dogs and is sometimes seen in cats.

•The most commonly affected breeds are Maltese, Poodle, Pomeranian, Keeshond, Bichon Frise, Chihuahua and German Shepherd.

•PDA is more common in females than males in most breeds.

•Pets diagnosed with a PDA have a greater than 50% mortality rate by one year of age if left untreated.

•A PDA will usually result in significant left sided heart enlargement and ultimately left sided congestive heart failure (fluid in the lungs/pulmonary edema).

•Pets with left sided heart failure will usually cough and have labored or difficulty breathing.

•Some patients with a PDA will not thrive or grow and may be considered the “runt” of the litter.

Very small dogs or cats require open chest surgery to tie off the vessel itself.

Prognosis

Most dogs and cats that undergo correction of their PDA have good to excellent long term prognosis, and most will lead a completely normal life after surgery. Some patients that were in congestive heart failure prior to their procedure may have to remain on some cardiac drugs long term. This is determined by the cardiologist on an individual pet basis. Thus, it is important to try to correct your pet’s PDA prior to them going into congestive heart failure

Cocoa has been getting much needed rest at her foster mom's house. Mostly couch time. Her incision is healing as expected, breathing rate is stable and normal and she’s still on multiple meds and cold compresses daily. Her appetite and attitude are outstanding. Enjoying short walks outside and we're just happy with her progress!!

P.S. she doesn't sound like a mini washing machine is in her chest anymore.

The surgeon reported that Cocoa had the largest PDA he's ever seen in a small dog. He has seen larger PDAs but only in much larger dogs. They required special instruments for her surgery that are not normally used for this procedure. During the surgery her blood pressure became excessively high (higher than expected for this procedure) and she had some unknown bleeding. Once they had the pressure stable the bleeding stopped. She has made it through the first 24 hours, which was the most critical. Her chest tube was removed today and she was allowed time in the yard. They are planning to keep her at least one more day and possibly send home Thursday. They have continued her on Lasix to keep the pressure down. She has a 4" incision and has a chest wrap. He says he feels very good about the surgery and her recovery.

Thank you again for all your help and concern!

We are just amazed by the response and support we have received thus far for Cocoa's heart campaign. It was questionable if our small group would be able to pull together the funds to save this sweet girl's life, but now we are well on our way! We asked and you quickly responded, and we have reached just over 60% of our needed funds. Her surgery is scheduled for Monday, just a few short days away! After the surgery she will spend the remainder of week in the hospital for recovery. If you could help us again, with the final stretch of Cocoa's Life Saving Surgery by sharing her story and her need for this surgery, we would be so grateful.

And again thank you for believing, as we do, that Cocoa deserves this chance at life!

    Warm regards,
