La Selva Solar Project

For the past several years, OTS has been implementing a Station Greening Initiative at the La Selva Research Station. The Government of Costa Rica has publically promoted the expansion of solar power to meet the energy needs of the country and to help reach the national goal of carbon neutrality. This campaign is to raise the funding needed for the adoption of solar photovoltaic technology to reduce our carbon footprint.

Campaign Details

The Organization for Tropical studies is a non-profit consortium of fifty universities, colleges, and research institutions from the U.S, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, South Africa and Australia.  Founded in 1963, OTS's mission is to provide leadership in education, research and the responsible use of natural resources in the tropics.  To this end OTS provide training in tropical biology and operates four research stations in diverse ecosystems in Costa Rica and in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

At its stations OTS is implementing a greening initiative to reduce its energy consumption, which includes installing solar panels and water heaters to lower the station's electrical consumption and replacing outdated air conditioners and removing old stand-alone refrigerators and freezers with high-efficiency cold rooms.  With an annual cost of more than $100,000 a year, La Selva's energy needs are the largest operational cost besides staffing at the station.  Las Cruces and Palo Verde have similar issues.  To date OTS staff has reduced energy consumption by 25%, but to reduce energy further, more solar equipment is needed.  Funds raised through the Giving Grid Program will have a direct impact on the number of solar panels we can acquire for our stations.
